Age-related changes on marking, marking-like behavior and the scent gland in adult Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).
Marking behavior, marking-like behavior [3], and changes of the scent glands were observed in aged Mongolian gerbils. In Experiment 1, changes in the marking and marking-like behavior with aging were evaluated in adult male and female Mongolian gerbils of an inbred strain aged 6 to 36 months. The frequency of marking behavior in males was significantly higher than females throughout the observa...
متن کاملFemale urinary chemosignals influence scent-marking behavior in male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).
The influence of females on the amount of scent-marking behavior displayed by male Mongolian gerbils was investigated. Males isolated from females scent mark at a low level which increases more than two-fold if females are present in the room for three weeks without direct contact with the males. A similar increase is obtained by application of pooled female urine directly onto the males' noses.
متن کاملFetal uterine position affects copulation and scent marking by adult male gerbils.
Those male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) that as fetuses resided in uterine locations adjacent to no females, when adult, scent marked more frequently, mounted estrous females with shorter latencies, and ejaculated after fewer intromissions than did those male gerbils that as fetuses resided in uterine locations adjacent to two females. Both the scent-marking frequencies and copulat...
متن کاملSome Experimental Tests of the Functional Significance of Scent-Marking by Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus}
The functional significance of male gerbil scent-marks was investigated in four experiments. In Experiments 1 and 2, males in a novel test environment marked more, groomed more, and urinated less in the presence of odors of a strange male than in their absence. Female odors elicited male marking more than did male odors. In Experiments 3 and 4, females were selectively less aggressive toward fa...
